State Rep. Dan Rayfield likely |
| Jan. 17 State Rep. Dan Rayfield is likely to take control of the Oregon House in February, after being officially nominated by Democratic representatives for the post on Sunday, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. Rayfield, a Corvallis resident who has spoken to the Linn County Democrats on a number of occasions, topped a contested race to replace longtime speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland. He won out against State Rep. Janelle Bynum, of Happy Valley, who had hoped to become the first Black speaker of the House in state history. Rayfield issued this statement: “I’m deeply honored that my caucus has entrusted me with this nomination. I recognize this comes with tremendous responsibility at a pivotal moment for families across our state.” Click here to see the full story by OPB's Dirk VanderHart |

Jan 6: One year later

'One year ago today, in this sacred place, our democracy was attacked. ... Our democracy held. We the people endured. We the people prevailed.

'On Jan. 6, we all saw what our nation would look like if the forces who seek to dismantle our democracy are successful. The lawlessness, the violence, the chaos. What was at stake then and now is the right to have our future decided, the way the Constitution describes it, by we the people, all the people.'

Marty Wilde decides not to run
for 4th Congressional District seat
| State Rep. Marty Wilde, D-Eugene. made this announcement in his weekly newsletter Jan. 3: Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to run for Rep. Peter DeFazio’s seat in Congress. After giving it some thought, it’s not the right time for me and my family. I’ve been in the military my kids’ entire lives. It’s pulled me away too frequently. They only have a few years left before they leave home. I’d like to enjoy them and not, as Peter put it, spend too much time on airplanes in, “the longest commute in the continental United States.” Perhaps there will be a time for me in the future. For now, I’m focusing on my family, my military duty and figuring out what’s next for me in state politics. |
