WHY I'M RUNNING:
I grew up poor on an organic farm in the Coast Range.  We never had much money, but I had a happy childhood because of loving parents, a supportive community, and the support of Oregonians who believed that no kid should go hungry, lack medical care, or have a substandard education.  Their support of food stamps, Medicaid, and strong public schools gave me the start I needed in life.
When I graduated from college, I wanted to pay those investments forward so that kids could have the same opportunities I did.  I joined the National Guard, fighting forest fires above Oakridge.  I went on active duty with the Air Force, helping shut down a coal power plant, working on commuter rail service, and prosecuting sexual harassment and assault.  When I left active duty, I continued to prosecute in the civilian sector, prosecuting domestic violence.
After 9/11, I activated 4 times to serve my country.  I prosecuted crimes against women in the Middle East, helped defend America’s skies at NORAD, helped track down war criminals in Bosnia, and worked for human rights in Afghanistan.  When I returned from overseas, I wanted to find a way to serve my community in a positive direction.  I volunteered for budget committee, police commission, and to advocate for the elderly.  I continue to serve in the Air National Guard, advocating for the rights of crime victims and leading a legal team that spans the country.
As a freshman legislator, I was proud to help pass an additional $1 billion per year for our prekindergarten through grade 12 schools, funding for the Oregon Health Plan to cover almost 1 million of our needy neighbors, and housing protections for 1.5 million renters.  I’m running for re-election to continue the fight for strong public schools, healthcare, housing, and an environment that will sustain our children as it does us.
