Steph Newton-Azorr elected
Democratic National Committee delegate

A big congratulations to Steph Newton-Azorr, Albany City councilor and former County Democrats vice chair, on being elected as a delegate to the Democratic National Committee! Steph will join Kien Truong and Diane Grover as the at-large delegates from Oregon to the national committee. Strike ends

Teachers, GAPS board ratify contract

The 21-day Albany teachers strike ended Monday evening with a settlement, as both the Greater Albany Education Association and Greater Albany Public School Board ratified the contract that had been tentatively agreed to over holiday the weekend. Return-to-work issues also were settled.
Schools reopened Tuesday on a two-hour delayed start.
The Greater Albany Education Association issued this statement following an 87 percent yes vote to ratify the contract:
"When educators strike, we all win. GAEA is elated to share that our three-week strike has come to an end as of this evening. Greater Albany members voted to ratify the tentative agreement and bring much needed investments into our classrooms. Thank you to every student, parent and community member who supported us along this hard-fought journey." (For contract highlights, click the button below.)
The school board ratified the contract and settlement agreement in an emergency meeting Monday evening at the school district office.
"Now we have a chance for some stability," Superintendent Andy Gardner said during the meeting." ... There's work to do, obviously, to heal, to come together, to let go, but I do believe this contract has made us a better district, a more collaborative district, and we'll work forward optimistically."
Monday marked the 10th no-school day since the strike started Nov. 12. Eight of those 10 days will be made up by converting some teacher grading days and work days, as well as a staff development day and President Day, to school days for students. Two early Wednesday release days will become full days for students. The school year was to end with a half day on Thursday, June 12. That will be full day, and the school year for students will end on Friday, June 13, also a full day.
