Linn Democrats adopt resolution on Gaza
The resolution, submitted by Susan Heath, Joanna Robinson, Rick Staggenborg, and Brandi Tucker, is titled "Regarding: Palestine and An Embargo on Military Aid and Weapons Transfer to Israel." It reads, in part, that the Linn County Democratic Party resolves as follows:
"Section 1. We condemn, in the strongest of terms, Israel’s ongoing program of famine and genocide in Gaza.
"Section 2. We expect our elected representatives to respond with actions that match the scale of the crisis, to stand up for the starving children in Gaza, and to use every available tool to demand the immediate, unrestricted, and sustained reopening of humanitarian aid distribution to the people of Gaza at the scale needed to reverse this worsening famine.
"Section 3. We support (a) an immediate ceasefire; (b) an arms embargo; and (c) a suspension of military aid.
"Section 4. We affirm our commitment to international law, the dignity and human rights of all people, especially those who are in urgent need, and the pursuit of a just and lasting peace for all in the region."
'The Last Class' with Robert Reich
to be shown Sept. 7 at The Pix
| Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. "The Last Class," to be screened at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at The Pix, 321 Second Ave. S.W., Albany, captures a master educator wrestling with the dual realities of his own aging and his students inheriting a world out of balance. Reich confronts the impending finality with unflinching candor, humor, introspection, and a rawness of emotion he has never shared publicly before. One thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus — the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that society has to stay the way it is. His final assignment: Who will be the teachers of tomorrow? |
Albany Banner Bridgade greets I-5, overpass
passersby with banner and signs
Albany Region Indivisible's Dave Pinyerd and Bernadette Niederer organized the event and made the signs.
"Due process is always a valid concern," Bernadette said. "We asked everyone here to vote on a whole bunch of slogans, and everyone agreed that this was the most timeless slogan." And timely. "There are over 60,000 people losing their due process in immigrant detention camps," she noted.
Twenty-six people turned out for the banner drop that went from 9:30 to 11 a.m.. "We had roughly half of the attendees wave at I-5 and the other half watching their backs and waving signs at cars on the overpass," Dave said. "We divided our time in half between the north and south sides of the overpass," That included UO football traffic headed south for the Ducks' afternoon opener against Montana State. "Massive support from the Duck cars," Dave added.
