Bill Hays
Zone 1 candidate for Linn Benton Lincoln Education Service District Board
• RESIDENCE: North Albany
• OCCUPATION: Retired United Methodist minister in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference. Also, retired from driving a Special Ed. bus with GAPS Transportation. • OCCUPATIONAL/WORK HISTORY: I have served United Methodist Churches in Portland, Hillsboro, Harrisburg and Jefferson. In Idaho, I served in Meridian and Payette. I drove for GAPS from 2019-2022. From 2015-2017 I was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in the Lebanon Branch. And, during a leave of absence from ministry I was a river guide on the Wild & Scenic section of the Rogue River from 2002-2006. • RELEVANT EXPERIENCE: In ministry I engaged people across all the generations from birth through end of life, and across all economic circumstances. I understand how to manage great demands and needs with limited resources. Working toward consensus and agreement to envision a common future has been the most meaningful side of my life as a pastor. My philosophy of ministry is found in a quote by William Sloan Coffin: “Christ can only build community out of seekers of the truth, not possessors of the truth.” My philosophy of life is: Good does not happen on accident. Good happens on purpose. ... Driving a Special Ed. bus taught me about the uniqueness of every student. In our training we were taught that the ride on the bus is the first and last classroom in a student’s day. • EDUCATION: I have an Accounting Certification from Oregon State University; a Masters of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois; and, a B.A. from Lewis University in Lockport, Illinois. • FAMILY: My wife, Joyce, and I have been married for 30 years. Together we blended our four children (all within two years of each other) into young adults who are great friends to each other. We have four granddaughters. Our grown children live all over the country. Our daughter lives here in Albany; our sons live in Phoenix, Arizona, New Haven, Connecticut; and in Portland. • HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Joyce and I enjoy gardening together and gathering with friends for game nights. Personally, I enjoy hiking and backpacking and reading science fiction. • WHY I’M RUNNING: I became acquainted with the work of the Linn Benton Lincoln ESD when I was driving students to ESD programs. Just like our blending a family of four children, LBL ESD does the quiet work of blending the supportive needs of the 12 school districts in Linn Benton Lincoln ESD. I want to become a board member who |
will take the message of this good work into our communities so people understand that the supportive work, especially for pre-school children and students with disabilities, enriches and makes possible the same opportunities.
